Butterflies

The caterpillars the Easter Bunny brought broke out of their chrysalis last week and had turned into butterflies.  Mac and I went in his room to get his clothes for school and there were 5 butterflies sitting in the butterfly garden.  Mac literally screamed and then looked up to the heavens and said “Thank you Easter bunny.  Thank you so much!”  When we first saw the butterflies they were not yet flying around, but by the time school was out they were quite active.  Mac watched them intently for two days.  He fed them watermelon and orange slices (as the directions suggested) and then on day two we set them free.   IMG_8010 IMG_8013  IMG_8020 IMG_8039 IMG_8024 The butterflies must have loved their butterfly garden in Mac’s room because they were not very anxious to fly away when we took them outside.  I’m not sure if it was the cool air, the strong breeze or the 4yr old hand that kept reaching in their home that scared them the most!  WE finally decided to leave their home unzipped and on the front porch so they could fly away when they were ready.  Apparently Miss Katie and Coe had to give them a little help a few hours later.  Coe was fascinated, but like many things recently he announced “that butterfly scares me!”  I hope the Easter bunny brings more caterpillars next year.
